Mahara is an open source e-portfolio system with a flexible display framework. Mahara, meaning 'think' or 'thought' in Te Reo Māori, is a user centred environment with a permissions framework that enables different Views of an e-portfolio to be easily managed. Mahara also features:

- Social networking system that allows users to create their own online learner communities
Mahara is fully integrated with Moodle through a secure single-sign-on (SSO) Moodle Network web service connection. Mahara is ideal for students at any level in their educational career, helping them to maintain learning mastery artifacts as they advance through the system. Mahara is also ideal in the corporate/governmental learning environment to help staff show workplace competency during a review period.
